The Story of Josie
On the 12th April 2000, a two year old black and white Greyhound bitch was brought to Grinshill Animal Rescue Centre by the local dog warden having been found in the rural village of Ellesmere. She was in a very poor state and the local district council was unable to fund her veterinary fees and had decided to have her put to sleep.
We therefore, took on the task of bringing 'Josie' back to health and after setting up a special fund we raised £300 to pay for her treatment. She was examined by a veterinary surgeon and below is a list of her injuries/symptoms:-
Mange;
Left hind middle toe bone protruding and exposed;
Many other toes bruised and some broken;
Large sore on the outside of her left fore foot and a nail bed infection. Josie (note her front foot).
Josie underwent the following treatment as a result of these conditions.
She was treated with antibiotics for 3 to 4 weeks and anti-inflammatory (pain control) tablets as necessary.
On the 17th April she had an anaesthetic, and two toes and some nails were amputated. All four feet were bandaged.Josie after her first operation. The dressings were changed every 3 to 4 days and the anti-biotic treatment continued.Josie recuperating
On the 25th April, Josie had another anaesthetic and a further toe was amputated as it was turing gangrenous. The other feet were flushed and cleaned and the dressings were kept on all four feet.
On the 3rd May the dressings were removed from her right front and right rear feet. However, the dressings on her left feet remained and were constantly renewed until their final removal on the 26th May.
Although Josie may need a boot on her left hind foot and has less toes and nails than she should have, she has made a good recovery. Her coat has re-grown and she has put on weight. She is now able to run around on soft ground. During her treatment Josie became more confident due to her stable and loving environment and she has always been very kind and gentle even when in pain.
Josie's history
As Josie had been ear-marked, we were able to find out a little about her past life. She was born in Scotland and trained in Kent where she was trialed twice. She then went to Perry Barr on the 11th January 2000 where she had one trial on the 24th January. Presumably she did not measure up to the job and she was then sold to the meat men who took her up to Preston. From there we don't know what happened to her except that she ended up in Ellesmere on the 12th April.
The happy ending
We are pleased to say that Josie has gone to a loving, local home and was the star attraction at a dog show held at the West Midlands Showground to raise funds for other unfortunate animals. Josie the celebrity
